Guidance on the role of digital wallets in UNTP
There is ongoing discussion in the community about the role of digital wallets in UNTP implementations, particular driven by participants from EU regulatory contexts where wallets are highly relevant.
UNTP's current credential exchange mechanism is intentionally wallet-agnostic:
- It does not require a digital wallet to issue or receive credentials
- It does not preclude the use of a digital wallet (credentials can be issued from or loaded into a wallet)
- It avoids tight dependencies on any particular wallet implementation or standard
I feel this is the right position for a globally applicable protocol. Digital wallet mandates reflect a portion of UNTP users but should not be an assumed universal baseline for all UNTP adopters.
Proposed Action:
- Provide guidance on the use of wallet with the UNTP
- Clarify the relationship between UNTP and digital wallets
- Provide practical guidance for implementors operating in contexts where wallets are relevant or mandated
- Do so without mandating or precluding their use
